RED CADILLAC - BIO

The was band formed in November 2007, thanks to Leo Artusi and Andrea Zodio, who enthusiastically decided to get back together.

The two met in the distant late 1980s, when one of the rarest rockabilly bands on the music scene in north-east Italy, started playing: Rock’o’Drilly. They were doing shows with this group mainly based on the Stray Cats music style. 

Their collaboration stopped in the 90s. Andrea (singer) turned to the rock and r’n’b from the 70s, playing along with Green Onions, while Leo (bass) moved house and settled elsewhere.

Toward the end of the 90s, they tried to put the group’s original lineup together, but it did not last long.

In 2006, Leo got a call from the rock’n’roll and swing band P-51 Airplanes, and became their official double bass player. His musical experience grew thanks to the Los Terribiles De Tijuana from Treviso, who chose him to replace their former double bass player, allowing him to take part in many big concerts, in his home country and also abroad.

Leo is currently playing with both bands.

In 2007 Leo and Andrea answered to a web ad and met up with Arrigo Martelli (lead guitar). The encounter was fundamental.

Arrigo is a young but brilliant guitar player, keen on classic rock’n’roll and fond of all the music heroes of the Fifties (Buddy Holly, Gene Vincent, etc.), as well as modern performers (Robert Gordon and Danny Gatton, above all).

He knows his guitar well (Diploma in classical guitar at Music Academy, Vicenza) and has developed a solid technique through years of practicing and playing.

In early 2000s, he played with the new country group Waterfalls. He is currently playing with Piazzolla Di Sosta, a tribute group to the great Argentine musician Astor Piazzolla.

Consequently the Red Cadillac band was born.

The early lineup was a quartet, featuring drums, but, according to the original idea of playing without a drummer, the band became almost immediately a trio: Andrea Zodio, lead vocals and acoustic rhythm guitar; Arrigo “Buddy Arry” Martelli: vocals and electric lead guitar; Leo Artusi: vocals and double bass. They soon started getting down to work, planning their performances, offering gigs with a mix of rock’n’roll and rockabilly, including a touch of swing, jive, oldies, and also some modern hits played in old rock’n’roll style. In addition lots of gags with the audience.

Since April 2008 (date of the dubut concert) to this day, Red Cadillac has kept working closely together to solidify their musical partnership, up to the creation of original songs, and to the birth of their own new sonic identity.

They started working on their first album in June 2009, concluding the recording sessions in September. The album is called “Home Made Cookies”, a overdubbing-free homage to the great records from the 50s.

The album was released in January 2010, and the band is already working on the follow-up, which is intended to include only original songs.

So, if by chance you stumble across Red Cadillac, get down to listening to their great performance. Get involved! Their music is always for the right occasion: take advantage of the catchy refrains in their songs, win the heart of that blonde cutie who’s just waiting somebody to dance with. Study how they manage to play high quality music, even without drums.

Known as  aphrodisiac, music with the right rhythm, no regrets! Their sound fills in those empty moments during the day.

La band nasce nel Novembre del 2007 grazie ad una idea scaturita dalla voglia di riprendere a suonare insieme da parte di Leo Artusi e Andrea Zodio. I due ragazzi si sono conosciuti nel lontano 1989, anno in cui prese forma una delle rarissime band rockabilly presenti nel panorama musicale del nordest d’Italia di quegl’anni: i Rock’o’Drilly. Con questa formazione portarono sulla scena un repertorio improntato soprattutto sulle sonorità degli Stray Cats. Il percorso però si divise negli anni novanta. Andrea passò al rock anni ’70 e r’n’b con i Green Onions  mentre Leo si stabilì altrove e si persero di vista.

Verso la fine degli anni novanta ci fu il tentativo di rimettere insieme la band originaria ma per problemi logistici la storia si chiuse dopo qualche anno. Nel 2006, Leo fu contattato dalla band rock’n’roll/swing P-51 Airplanes e in breve ne entrò a far parte come contrabbassista ufficiale. La sua esperienza musicale maturò ulteriormente con  i trevigiani Los Terribiles de Tijuana che lo chiamarono a sostituire, prima saltuariamente e poi definitivamente, il precedente contrabbassista e dandogli la possibilità di maturare esperienza partecipando ad importanti concerti in Italia e all’estero. Attualmente Leo collabora con le bands citate.

Nel 2007 Leo e Andrea rispondono ad un annuncio e conoscono Arrigo Martelli. L’incontro è fondamentale e magnetico. Arrigo è un chitarrista giovane ma molto preparato, amante del rock’n’roll classico e dei suoi monumenti (su tutti Buddy Holly, Gene Vincent) e dei loro interpreti moderni (su tutti Robert Gordon, Danny Gatton). E’ in possesso di una conoscenza profonda dello strumento (diplomato al conservatorio in chitarra classica) e di una tecnica affinata negli anni grazie all’amore verso il genere. Nei primi anni del millennio suona con i Waterfalls, gruppo che presenta un repertorio stile “new country”. Attualmente collabora anche con i Piazzolla di Sosta, gruppo che ripropone i celeberrimi tanghi del grande maestro omonimo:  Ástor Piazzolla.

Nascono così i Red Cadillac.

Inizialmente la formazione è un quartetto in cui trova posto una batteria ma l’idea originaria ne prevede l’assenza e così il quartetto si trasforma subito in trio.

Andrea Zodio: voce e chitarra acustica ritmica; Arrigo “Buddy Arry” Martelli: voce e chitarra elettrica; Leo Artusi: contrabbasso e cori.

Da subito si lavora per offrire al pubblico un repertorio rock’n’roll e rockabilly inserendo qualche spruzzatina di swing, jive, old 20/30 e riportando qualche hits moderna alle sonorità di quegli anni. A questo si aggiunge il coinvolgimento delle persone che assistono arricchendo lo spettacolo con gags musicali e non, in modo da soddisfare il pubblico più vario.

Da Aprile 2008 (data del primo concerto) fino ad oggi i Red Cadillac aumentano l’affiatamento sempre più fino a dar vita a pezzi propri originali. E l’idea originaria assume così nuova forma portando i tre a creare un sound tutto loro.

Da Giugno a Settembre 2009 registrano il loro primo cd dal titolo “Home Made Cookies”. Esso si compone da 15 brani di cui 7 originali e 8 cover. La registrazione avviene in “presa diretta” all’interno di un teatro e senza sovra incisioni dei tre strumenti musicali; una scelta fatta per omaggiare i grandi degli anni ’50. Il cd esce a Gennaio 2010 e ne è già in lavorazione un secondo che comprenderà solamente pezzi originali.

Se vi capita di incontrare i Red Cadillac provate a fermarvi e divertitevi con loro… li ascolterete sorseggiando la vostra birra preferita o li terrete in sottofondo mentre cercate una scusa plausibile per mollare la ragazza… li sfrutterete per conquistare proprio quella biondina con un vorticoso ballo o li studierete per capire come suonare musica ad alto contenuto ritmico senza uno straccio di batteria… li terrete in casa come colonna sonora per le vostre cene a lume di candela (sono un potente afrodisiaco e non ve ne pentirete!) oppure li sparerete a manetta in auto, andando al lavoro la mattina (sono un ottima sveglia e danno la carica per tutta la giornata!)… qualsiasi sia il motivo,  date ascolto, se li incontrate, fermatevi! Tornerete a casa con il sorriso...
